LAGOS, Nigeria — The family of Nigerian music legend Innocent Idibia, popularly known as Tuface, has raised concerns over his mental state following his recent engagement to Edo State lawmaker, Natasha Osawaru.
His mother, Rose Idibia, has publicly alleged that her son is “not in his right senses” and may be under a spell following his highly controversial engagement to the deputy majority leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.
In a viral video released on Thursday, February 13, 2025 evening, Mrs. Idibia made an emotional plea to Nigerians, calling on them to help her beg Osawaru to free her son.
In the two-minute video, a visibly distressed Mrs. Idibia said her son was going through a painful divorce from his estranged wife, Annie Idibia, and was not in the right frame of mind to make such a life-altering decision.
“Good evening, Nigerians. My name is Mrs. Rose Idibia, the mother of Tuface. This message is for Ms. Natasha Osawaru of Edo State. I’m calling on all mothers in Nigeria to help me beg her to free my son,” she said.
She went on to express fears that the singer was being influenced by spiritual means, pointing to the mystical beads Osawaru allegedly placed on his hands and neck.
“My son is going through a divorce process, and he is clearly not in his right senses now. I know my son well. That is not him. Please, Natasha, the beads you put on his hand and on his neck, remove them and free him,” she pleaded.
Tuface’s engagement to Osawaru came as a shock to many Nigerians, particularly given his recent marital troubles with Annie Idibia.
In the widely shared engagement video, Tuface and Osawaru were seen dancing together, surrounded by friends who cheered as the singer presented a ring to the lawmaker. The moment ended in a long embrace, seemingly confirming their union.
The proposal comes just days after Tuface publicly confirmed his romantic relationship with Osawaru, following intense speculation over their closeness in recent weeks.
Rumours had swirled after Tuface was spotted at the Edo State Assembly and later seen partying with Osawaru in Lagos.
The singer has since taken to social media to defend his new fiancée, dismissing claims that Osawaru was the cause of his marital breakdown with Annie.
“Hon. Natasha has been dragged and called all sorts of names,” he reportedly wrote on Instagram.
“She is a young, brilliant, amazing woman and had nothing to do with what happened between me and Annie. Yes, I love her, and I want to marry her.”
His statement, however, has done little to quell the backlash, with many Nigerians criticizing the speed of his new relationship and the perceived insensitivity towards his estranged wife and family.
The engagement has ignited intense debate on social media, with fans and critics weighing in.
Some supporters argue that Tuface deserves happiness and has the right to move on, while others accuse him of being reckless with his decisions.
“This is too soon. He should focus on his family and healing from the divorce before rushing into another marriage,” one commenter wrote.
Another critic added: “Annie stood by him for years, through all his struggles. This is heartbreaking to watch.”
Despite the controversy, neither Tuface nor Osawaru has responded to Mrs. Idibia’s accusations about the alleged spiritual manipulation.
As the situation continues to unfold, many are watching to see whether the singer’s family will intervene further, or if Tuface and Osawaru will proceed with their wedding plans despite the uproar.
