The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have announced plans to initiate an indefinite strike due to unpaid salaries.
On Wednesday, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi released a joint statement detailing their grievances. The unions have given the federal government a three-week ultimatum to settle outstanding salaries.
They noted that the government’s previous 10-day grace period for paying four months of arrears for university workers ends on July 26, 2024. With that deadline approaching, they have set a new three-week timeline starting September 17, demanding action or facing an indefinite strike.
If their demands are not met, the unions have threatened to close universities and inter-university institutes.
Among their key demands are the payment of withheld salaries for four months, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government.
The unions criticized the federal government for failing to respond to the initial six-week deadline they set in July of this year.
